Sync. Nicolas Buffe

Nicolas Buffe, a French artist based in Tokyo since 2007, is the creator behind a
multifaceted, interdisciplinary world combining erudite and popular culture.
After graduating from les Beaux-Arts de Paris, he obtained a PhD from Tokyo
University of the Arts in 2014. Born in 1978, he belongs to a generation naturally
marked by Japanese pop culture in 1980~'90 France, developing from childhood a
passion for Anime, Tokusatsu, Japanese manga and Video games. From European
classical literature such as "Orlando Furioso" and "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili” to
"Space Sheriff Gavan" and "The Legend of Zelda", he uses a wide range of narrative
and visual influences to establish his unique style that fuses art and subculture.
Nicolas Buffe has also ventured in various creative territories such as fashion, opera
art direction, crafts, architecture. In 2014, he held a solo show "The Dream of
Polifilo" at the Hara Museum of contemporary art Tokyo. Most recently, in 2018, he
designed one of the five facades of the the Museum Garage in Miami’s Design
District (project curated by Terence Riley, with WORKac; J. Mayer H.; Clavel
Arquitectos; K/R), while over the winter of 2018-2019, he set up a monumental
installation inside Ginza Six in Tokyo. In 2019 he was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre
des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government.
